The Good and The Bad

Throughout the play A Streetcar Named Desire, the protagonist, Blanche, can be viewed from two separate perspectives, or the good and bad aspects of her character. During the beginning of the play Blanche is seems to have the potential of the bad character in the story, but this is not entirely true. She arrives at Stella’s house in New Orleans claiming that she is taking a break from her job when in reality, she lost her job due to the sexual relationship between herself and a seventeen year old student. Not only does she lie to her sister about the issue with her career, but she lies about drinking and her past. The reader first sees Blanche drinking alcohol, constantly lying to her sister about many things, and seeming as though she could cause serious problems between Stella and Stanley, but eventually there is an explanation for this. Although Blanche does lie to many people about certain things, she never does it to intentionally hurt them. The reason for her lying is her attempt to live in a better world. After all the bad things that had happened to Blanche, such as the loss of her husband, the loss of her relatives, and the loss of Belle Reve, she was attempting to live in a world she wanted to live in. This could be in order to keep from making the same mistake as her husband and taking the wrong path out of life: suicide. Instead, Blanche steps into a state of illusion. Blanche believes that the illusion she lives in is for the better of her family, as well as herself. Eventually Blanche begins to fully believe in her lies and enters a state of mental instability, but the significant events that have occurred throughout her life have been the cause of these things. Even though Blanche does carry a lying and deceitful side, she is an overall good person.

Designer Babies

In my opinion the idea of creating designer babies is unethical unless there is ways this technology can be used to save lives. Genetically modifying babies is not morally right and really has no point in the society we live in. If this idea was created in order to make the individual perfect that is impossible. In todays society nothing is ever perfect  considering societies definition of beauty and perfection is always changing, not to mention everyone’s perspective on beauty and perfection is different. Each and every person is created the way they were meant to be and completely different from everyone on earth. Genetically modifying babies would take the diversity out of the world and it would just be weird. The only reason I would ever consider this idea is if it used for the health of an individual. For example, a deathly disease is developing in a baby and this technology can be used to save a life, why not? But when it is used in attempt to make a baby perfect, it is unethical and illogical. Perfection has no distinct definition and every individual has there own, so in my opinion it is idiotic to attempt to create perfection using genetic engineering.
